A health crisis in a context of high vulnerability

In April 2020, the coronavirus pandemic severely affected populations in developing countries, including Cameroon. Although cases of infection and deaths were reported, the true scale of the crisis remained difficult to assess due to the lack of testing and reliable data. In response, authorities ordered the closure of schools, educational centers, public places and leisure establishments as early as March 18, 2020, calling on the population to limit their movements.

However, for a large part of the population living below the poverty line and depending on daily income, lockdown measures represented a major challenge. In the absence of sufficient economic and social support, many were confronted with an impossible choice between health risks and daily survival. This reality made the crisis even more severe, especially in the most disadvantaged communities of the country.

Fragile systems facing the emergency

The Cameroonian healthcare system faces serious shortages, particularly a lack of protective equipment, disinfectants, hospital beds and intensive care capacity. Diagnosis of coronavirus often relies solely on clinical symptoms, due to the lack of available tests, greatly limiting patient care and disease prevention.

In education, continuity of learning remains very limited. Online learning is difficult to implement due to the lack of computer equipment, frequent power outages and the high cost of internet access. In the face of these challenges, people rely on hope and solidarity, while awaiting sustainable solutions to overcome this unprecedented crisis.

Health emergency, essential solidarity and protection of the most vulnerable.
