Concrete support for education in a challenging socio-economic context

The village of Melong II, located in the Littoral region of Cameroon, within the municipality of Baré-Bakem, has approximately 1,749 inhabitants. This locality is heavily affected by rural exodus, economic decline following the collapse of coffee farming once the main source of income as well as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic that occurred in 2020.

Faced with this concerning situation, the headmistress of Saint Mark School of Melong II, Mrs. Marie-Gisèle Mongoué, issued a call for help to the association Hand on Heart e.V.. Thanks to the generosity of its partners, and in particular the donation of €3,000 granted by Sparkasse Saarbrücken in December 2020, the association was able to respond positively to this urgent request.

School uniforms to restore dignity and equality

This initiative made it possible to provide school uniforms to 76 out of the 111 students enrolled in the school, who previously did not have any. This essential support helps improve learning conditions, strengthen the sense of belonging, and promote equality among students.

Rewarding excellence and encouraging academic perseverance

As part of a merit-based approach, 30 students the top five from each grade level, from SIL to CMII, for the first semester of the school year were rewarded. They received books, notebooks, and various educational gifts in French, in recognition of their efforts, to encourage perseverance, and to motivate all students to invest more in their studies and build a better future.

Special attention to younger children

The nursery school children were not forgotten. The 47 students from different age groups each received colored pencils and small school kits, distributed by the school administration to improve their learning conditions from an early age.

Support for staff and the local community

In addition, 50 bags of food supplies and hygiene products were distributed to teaching and administrative staff, religious and traditional authorities of the village, as well as some parents present during the ceremony. This initiative aimed to strengthen community solidarity and support all stakeholders involved in children’s education.

A celebration full of emotion and sharing

On Sunday, January 17, 2021, a large festive ceremony was held in the Bagangté neighborhood in Melong II. The event featured numerous student performances, from nursery to CMII: poetry recitations, educational games, traditional dances, and various entertainment activities. Despite the absence of electricity on the school premises, the celebration took place in a warm and friendly atmosphere.

Starting at 11:30 a.m., the ceremony ended at 2:30 p.m. with a generous buffet of local specialties, spontaneously prepared by the residents to welcome guests and express their gratitude.
